NBA Lockout

Courtesy of chicagonow.com

As many of you are just becoming aware of, it has been announced that there
is a tentative agreement on the NBA locckout. This was the case because the players
and owners could not agree on a new collective bargaining agreement. Now, while I am
all for an individuals rights and the collective bargaining process, there were many
more people being affected that just the owners and players. The NBA is a multi-billion
dollar industry which has thousands of employees. Someone who maintains the property,
manages the equipment, valets, concession stands, gift shops etc. There are also
countless of small businesses within a mile or so that rely on the NBA. It is
estimated that many resturaunts and basketball themed bars are losing up to 40
percent of there revenue.

"I mean I'm worried, but it can't be to the point of thinking that the whole season
is going to be cancelled," said Courtney Lee, Rockets guard, in an interview with FOX
26 Sports. Lee has not lost sight of the fact that the players are not the only ones
who are affected by the NBA lockout. "It affects the players, but not just the players,"
Lee said. "it affects the City of Houston. Lee is referring to businesses like China
Garden, the family-owned and operated restaurant which is one block away from Toyota Center.

After a secret meeting earlier this week, the sides met for more than 15 hours Friday,
working to try to save the season. This handshake deal, however, still must be ratified
by both owners and players.

Have you ever wondered where the term "Black Friday" orgin from?

The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975.

The other meaning of the term came later and gets its origins from an accounting term to mean profit for the retailers. Where as being "in the red" indicates a loss, being "in the black" means profits. As the popularity of these sales caught on, retailers could expect a very profitable day on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday has marked the beginning of the Holiday shopping season since the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924,

Even though it's convenient to do all your shopping in one place, avoid going to
a grocery store for kitchen supplies, like measuring cups and cookie sheets, or seasonal
items, like holiday decorations and gift bags. These products will have inflated prices.
Buy them at a big-box chain, like Target or Walmart, instead. Roasting pans, aluminum foil
and many like items can be bought at dollar stores."
